UL Listing Meaning

Consumers all over the world have found UL marks listings on products for decades. The markings and symbols are different depending on the location. Many of these products are marked as "UL Listed." What does it mean if a product is UL listed?

UL Listing

When a product has a UL Listing Mark, it means that product samples have met UL's safety requirements. UL publishes its own standards for safety and tests the product samples to ensure that they comply.

UL Listing Marks

UL Listing Marks typically appear on products and components usually with the letters "UL" in a circle and the word "Listed." The UL Listing Mark may also include the product or company name and a serial number or alphanumeric control number. Look for UL Listing Marks on a variety of products including appliances, furnaces, smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and computer equipment.

UL Listing Marks for the United States and Canada

Many products in the U.S. and Canada feature UL Listing Marks. Some of the marks may appear slightly different. There is one version of the mark used only in the United States, another that is used only in Canada and another for both the United States and Canada. This is because the safety requirements in the United States are frequently different from safety requirements in Canada. The different marks indicate whether the product is compliant with requirements in Canada, the United States or both.

The next time you find a product that carries the UL Listing mark, you can rest assured that it is tested for safety by UL. UL's Follow-Up Service program verifies that UL Listed products are still manufactured in compliance with UL's safety requirements even after the initial testing. Look for the UL Listing mark on products, appliances and components.
